Original E-Mail:

Mrs. Aukerman sent this message on Saturday August 26th…You may not have received it…PLEASE Respond by Thursday August 31st to Mr. or Mrs. Aukerman (aukermanfamily@troop410.org)  …

You are receiving this e-mail because you expressed an interest in attending the Scout Weekend at the Flying Circus Aerodrome in Bealeton, VA on September 15-17, 2006.  Please print this e-mail because it contains a LOT of information and I need a form and some answers back from you ASAP.

My preliminary count is that there will be 10 scouts and 6 adults.  My initial cost estimate did not include an allowance for food (my oversight), so the actual cost for the weekend will be $25 per person.  This includes the registration fee, air show admission on Sunday, and meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday, breakfast and lunch on Sunday).  All attending will need to bring tents.  There will be port-a-johns and running water, but no showers.  Ken Aukerman and I will be responsible for meal planning, shopping and bringing chuck boxes as needed.

We will caravan to Bealeton, Virginia (near Warrenton), approximately a 2.5 hour drive, including a 30 minute fast food stop.

Question 1:   Can you drive and, if so, how many scouts can you take in addition to your own?  If you can drive, I need the following information: your car's make and model, and your insurance coverage amounts (liability and property damage) - this is for the tour permit.

Question 2:   Can you meet at Aqualand Marina at 6:30 on Friday evening and, if not, what time can you be there?

Airplane rides will be available on Saturday and Sunday, but are not included in the $25 fee.  Costs are $30 for a ride in a Piper Cub, $60 for a ride in an open cockpit airplane.  Every scout who plans to take an airplane ride is required to have a BSA Flight Consent Form signed by BOTH parents (if living).  The form is attached to this e-mail.

Form: BSA Flight Consent Form - complete and sign the form ASAP.  I have to ask you to get the form to me BEFORE Tuesday morning, August 29 - I must get the completed forms to Council by Tuesday.  You can get your form to me by faxing to me at 202-502-4399, hand-delivering it to my house (7429 Robin Road - off Route 6 in La Plata, 3.2 miles east of Route 301), or having your scout hand-deliver it to Mr. Aukerman at La Plata High School on the first day of school.

Scouts will have the opportunity to work on the following merit badges: Aviation, Astronomy, Space Exploration, Traffic Safety, and First Aid.  I will bring blue cards for these merit badges for all scouts who have not already completed them - I can get that info from Scoutmaster.  Some merit badges will require additional work either before or after this weekend.  The requirements NOT covered on the weekend are listed below:\

MERIT BADGE REQUIREMENTS

Most of the MB's will require attendance at all sessions with the exception of Astonomy which requires a night observation.

A make up session Saturday evening or Sunday morning for those who miss part of an Aviation MB session to take part in a plane ride...

Aviation None (All requirements will be covered during the Merit Badge sessions)
Astronomy

4a.  Make two sketches of the Big Dipper. In one sketch, show the Big Dipper's orientation in the early evening sky.  In another sketch, show its position several hours later. In both sketches, show the North Star and the horizon. Record the date and time each sketch was made.

        6.   At approximately weekly intervals, sketch the position of Venus, Mars or Jupiter in relation to the stars. Do this for at least four weeks and at the same time of night. On your sketch, record the date and time next to the planet's position. Use your sketch to explain how planets move.

Space Exploration

        3.  Build a model Rocket as described for requirement #3, bring this rocket and two engines with you to launch and recover.  Use only "A" or "B" engines for your rocket.

5b. Using magazine photographs, news clippings, and electronic articles (such as from the Internet), make a scrapbook about a current planetary mission.

        7.  Design an inhabited base on the Moon or Mars. Make drawings or a model of your base. In your design, consider and plan for the following:
a) Source of Energy
b) How it will be constructed
c) Life-support system
d) Purpose and function

        8.   Discuss with your counselor two possible careers in space exploration that interest you. Find out the qualifications, education, and preparation required and discuss the major responsibilities of those positions.

Traffic Safety

1a.  Make a scrapbook containing 10 newspaper articles about serious traffic crashes. Prepare a summary table of facts in the articles indicating the number of people injured, the number killed, type of crash (single vehicle, head-on collision, etc.) , time of occurrence, age of the driver, whether alcohol or drugs were involved, use of safety belts, and other factors that were reported to have contributed to the crash (weather conditions, fatigue, construction, etc.). Discuss how these crashes could have been prevented.

First Aid

        1.    Satisfy your counselor that you have current knowledge of all first-aid requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks.

3c.   Demonstrate proper technique in performing CPR using a training device approved by your counselor.

A schedule of events is attached.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions.  This promises to be a great weekend!
